56 BMW Mini Cooper S
Cold Start Engine Noise Video Recording
In response to the growing concerns by owners of the 56 Mini Cooper S (including myself!) regarding cold start engine noise likened to that of a tractor engine, I decided to use my Nokia N95 to record the noise. And in all the excitement, I held the phone the wrong way round!
As a proud Mini owner, I too am deeply concerned at the possibility of long term engine damage caused by the terrible noise that sometimes comes from under the bonnet/hood first thing in the morning or after being stood for 8 hours or so as in this video. Apart from anything else it can be quite unnerving if someone's watching when you hit the start button on your gleaming Mini, and you don’t know weather or not your engine's going to sound like it’s chewing it’s self up today?
Personally I liken the noise to a very old and worn engine struggling to get the oil pressure up.
I must point out that the noise is very much intermittent and after a minute or two the engine sounds fine..
We were advised by dealer Derek Woodman, Blackpool, that the noise is normal for this car, and thus been reluctant to return to them. Also after being shown the video, a senior mechanic from David Holmes, Stockport also says the noise is normal. When asked why my Mini didn't always sound like a tractor every morning, he said that it depends on which "phase" the engine starts?
like many others, I am awaiting some kind of information/recall from BMW or Derek Woodman before the warranty is up!.. Any advise from BMW Mini or a Mini Dealer would be greatly appreciated. Email address below..
